Cale’s Season Review

First Race - MBM Hell of the south - Apr 11th
Last Race – Kentucky State Championships - Dec 6th
Best race - either O2S or Cam Rock CX
Worst Race – any of the 3 CX races where I was too sick to race.
MTB - 8 Races
Track – 12 Race Nights
Cyclocross – 16 Races

2009 was a good year cycling-wise, I took it easier during the summer as far as actual races go but got in more cycling related stuff than I ever have before although it was all a bit un-organized and unfocused. The track season treated me pretty well and I upgraded from a 4 to a 3 and continued to do alright in the 3’s. I lost a bit of motivation late in the track season because of a bit of overtraining that left me struggling to keep up with any accelerations late in the season. I didn’t want to f* up my CX season so I backed it off a bit towards the end of the season which worked out pretty well.

The MTB season was probably my most unfocused season to date as I didn’t really have any goals or target races I managed to do a few 12hr races either solo or duo with Katy and 1 WORS race which I did just because it was convenient. None of those races produced anything like a great result but I wasn’t expecting much since I didn’t put a lot of time or effort into training for them. For 2010 I’m looking to focus a bit more on the WORS calendar and see if I can be competitive in that venue this year.

My one standout MTB race was Ore to Shore; I raced the SS class and had no real idea of what to ride for gearing or where I should seed myself in the giant rolling start. Despite all that I pegged my race pace and nutrition and felt fabulous for the entire race and ended up 5th place SS next year I would love to improve on that finish and maybe get onto the podium. As an aside the whole trip up to Marquette was fabulous and I’m hoping we can extend it a bit more this year to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and trails up there.

CX season was my focus this year and I actually got in a good block of training starting about 6 weeks before the first race (this was also my first attempt at training with a powertap). Coming into the season my goals were to place in several 3’s races and get enough points to upgrade to p/1/2 in 2010 the season started off alright with several solid results and peaked with a 3rd place at Cam Rock just behind 2 guys who upgraded to p/1/2 in the next race. So after that I was feeling great about my chances to maybe even eek out a win this year and get my upgrade but a week off and then an unexpected sickness really messed with my season and I ended up missing 3 races because I just couldn’t ride or train at all. After that I came back to some decent results but I was missing that extra gear on the top end and couldn’t get onto the podium again this year. So all in all a good season but I did miss out on my goal although hopefully I will be able to rectify that shortly after next season starts.
In the non competitive side of things I went on tons of super fun rides with my teammates and generally had a lot of fun on the bike this year, I’m hoping for more of the same in that regard next year.
That’s about all for my season in 2009; hope to see you all out there in 2010.
